When embarking on creating the dark
atmospheric world of The Nun
I knew that I required a score infused with a heavy authentic weight that could both ground the movie
the adventure and the characters’ emotional journeys
whilst steadily steeping you deeper and deeper inside an ancient
unholy terror.
Abel brought an elegant balance of layers to this musical landscape
cloaking the movie to create something sensitive and intimate when it was required and also of a formidable scale
painting a musical picture that crept far beyond the edges of the cinema screen.
Abel’s music lays the foundations for Father Burke’s past guilt
Sister Irene’s internal doubts and gives the Abbey of St Carta and the Nuns who inhabit it a grand sense of history
gravitas and a building sense of dread
that offers up Father Burke’s question of: “are the grounds still holy?”…
It was important to give our Demon Nun
Valak
her own theme; a disturbing motif that could support her presence as she stalks Irene from the shadows
through the long corridors and catacombs of the castle and conjure up iconic aural images that could chill your very blood.
Abel embraced all these challenges with such wonder and enthusiasm and consideration. Visiting him in his studio as he concocted his dark world of unholy melodies was one of my favorite aspects of making The Nun. Just sitting and watching and listening
as my film grew in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Note from Abel
My score for THE NUN plays on two extremes of the religious horror genre — ruthless violence and selfless spirituality. The former personified by the demon Valak
the latter by Sister Irene
each has its own melodic theme.
Both themes hark back to the medieval chants of cloistered monasteries and forbidden pagan rituals
veiled in dark
turbulent textures and creeping
unsettling tones.
Following Corin Hardy’s vision
I translated the stylistic elements of the Conjuring universe to a different time period and setting
using the darkest
feral power of the orchestra
with an enormous 7-foot tall drum and a diabolical throat singer.
