Commentary from the composers:
When we started creating music for Best Shot we decided to approach the original music in much the same way we create songs for record labels & pop artists; but instead we treated the show as the artist. We developed songs
working with singers
rappers & musicians in the same way we would develop an album. One of our featured singers
Mereba
is a recording artist with Interscope Records and Scotty Grand (vocalist) has been the creative director for Jordin Sparks
JoJo & Keke Palmer. We brought them in and developed material specifically because there was something in their voices that helped bring the picture to life.
There was also a desire to harken back to the history of Newark
musically speaking
so we called on some friends in the jazz world. Gary Thomas
a jazz legend who has toured with the likes of Miles Davis
Herbie Hancock & John McLaughlin
was featured throughout the score along with Russell Kirk who has performed with Parliament Funkadelic
Sam Rivers
Terri Lynne Carrington and Jill Scott. Just as Duke Ellington would write for specific performers we were able to write extremely detailed pieces because we knew exactly who would be performing them and were familiar with their particular strengths.
The look into the lives of these young men from Newark central has been an amazing canvas for music because of the depth of emotion portrayed on screen. We hope that audiences are just as inspired as we were while working on this series and that hearing the soundtrack will help them relive all the great moments.
